The Story Of My User

Meet my user, Ursula,

35 years old, a beautiful and smart graphic designer,
Every morning a smoothie is a must, hobbies change from time to time, but doing sports stays forever. Works out three times a week for 1 or 2 hours each time. Knows her body well, knows how to work out properly and how to push it. Uses her mobile phone all the time.

Challenge

The goal was to find out a particular area in her life that can be improved to make it better and useful for her as well as people like her. And what changes can make or create to improve her and users experience towards to this issue.

Discovery

User Interview

I structured a series of interview questions, to help to identify one main problem that frustrates her within the limited time box. During the interview, we identified the problem area: her regular workout routine.

The frustration is that she has collected an enormous amount of work out information and suggestions in her head, but this is not organized, so whenever she needed to recall particular workout information, she sometimes couldn’t remember, and she had to take some time to recall it.

Also, she doesn't like to follow a fixed workout plan. She would like to tailor each of her workout sessions based on how she feels at the time; but quickly picking out what to do when she is ready to go can be challenging for her at present, as she has to go through all the information she has collected in her head and then somehow try to come up with a workout plan.

Concept Map

I drew a concept map with her to find out what her feelings and attitude towards her workout problems were, then I was able to narrow the main issues to two points:

• Ability to organize her workout information and ideas.

• Ability to give the instant suggestion of workout plan based on her specific requirements at the time.

User Flows

I sketched a user flow for my user to follow her mindset of using the app, to identify her decision points and how easy and quick it is to get to her goal. Also to define the features which my user needs the most.

She pointed out that she would love to quickly get to the workout suggestions based on how her body feels, her mood, and her available time; then categories her stored workout images into her resource section with fewer steps.

Paper wireframes

(used Marvel for the testing)

I drew very initial ideas and feature pages to discuss them with my user. We changed the layouts to suit her preferences. Using paper prototyping, I was able to explore the concept and refine design solutions; we focused on functions and smooth flow.

High Fidelity Prototype

After testing the paper prototype with Ursula, I made few changes to the final prototype, such as preference page with fewer selections. In select 'which body parts to work on' page, I took off the searching bar and gave the freedom to the user to control how long to exercise by only giving advice about the time frame for each excise.

I designed my high fidelity prototype based on Ursula's working out habit. She loves yoga and pole dance movement, but other users can personalise their app as they wish, according to their preferences.
That makes this app personalised.
